DESIGNING MY DREAM HOTEL: BRUTALIST TEXTILE WALL ART AT ITS BEST by Belen Senra
When embarking on the journey to design my dream hotel, I envisioned a space that harmonizes raw architectural beauty with vibrant, thoughtful creativity. At the heart of this vision lies the integration of stunning brutalist textile wall art, a style that embodies both strength and sophistication while inviting guests into a world of bold expression.
What is Brutalism in Design?
Brutalism, often characterized by its stark, unadorned structures and an emphasis on materials like concrete, steel, and glass, has made a significant impact on the architectural landscape. This design approach embraces the beauty of imperfection and the honest portrayals of materials, allowing them to speak for themselves. The rawness of brutalism often evokes a sense of power and permanence, offering a striking canvas for artistic expression, particularly through textile art.
NOTE: all my pieces are custom made in color, size and pattern.
The Role of Textile Wall Art in Brutalism
Incorporating textile wall art into a brutalist environment adds layers of texture and warmth that balance the harshness of concrete and steel. These pieces not only soften the space but also create focal points that draw the eye and evoke emotion. Textile art—ranging from woven tapestries to fabric prints—serves as a medium to introduce color and creativity, making an otherwise cold atmosphere feel welcoming and inviting.
Designing with Intent: My Creative Process
As I began the design process, I immersed myself in the world of textile art, seeking pieces that resonate with the principles of brutalism. I envisioned large-scale weavings that showcase bold geometric patterns and natural fibers, emphasizing both the tactile and visual aspects of the art. The interplay of light and shadow on textured surfaces became a vital consideration, with art pieces strategically placed to enhance natural illumination throughout the hotel.
Highlighting Key Textile Features
Each textile piece in this dream hotel is carefully selected for its ability to reflect the brutalist aesthetic while embodying a sense of artistic flair. Rich earth tones and monochromatic colors are predominant, echoing the raw materials of the building itself. The patterns, inspired by architectural lines and organic forms, create a dialogue between the environment and the art, allowing guests to experience an interplay of structure and creativity.
Creating an Inviting Atmosphere
By integrating textile wall art into the design, I aim to transform the starkness of brutalism into an environment that feels both edgy and approachable. The textiles add a layer of comfort and warmth, encouraging guests to relax and enjoy the space. Each corridor and room tells a story through its art, sparking curiosity and inviting interaction, reinforcing the idea that even raw architecture can embody a sense of coziness.
